Ginger Gail Land, crowned as Georgia's first Sweet Potato Princess in November 1961, later became the state sweet potato queen.  Ginger, who became Mrs. Luther Tomlinson, died in 1983 after a fierce and painful two-year battle with cancer.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Land, Jr. of the Land's Crossing community, Ginger was born November 23, 1944, and grew up in Irwin County.  She graduated from Irwin County High School in 1962 after a very sucessful 4-year studies/activities there.  She was majorette for three years and drum majorette her senior year at ICHS.  In addition she was a thespian, a member of Tri-Hi-Y, the annual staff and was the FHA Sweetheart.  She was voted "Most Talented" in her senior year.   Ginger graduated from South Georgia College and later from the University of Georgia where she received her BS degree in education.

As the reigning festival royalty, Ginger participated in the "Miss Georgia Agriculture" pageant in Atlanta and was second runner-up in the event.  Her year's reign was promotional, educational, and distinguished.  She was a lovely and dedicated Princess.

Ginger taught school for several years, first in North Carolina and later in Dublin where her husband became owner of a pharmacy.  She became ill in 1981, but with her own strength and the support of her loved ones, she battled cancer until April 13, 1983.
